PLETTENBERG BAY MAIN STREET -
UPGRADING FINALLY STARTED!
Some concerns were expressed by locals with regards to the
traffic in the main street during the upgrading. Subsequently
the following information was released from the office of
the Mayor.
Plettenberg Bay's Main Street is to remain
open for traffic in both directions throughout the construction
of the first phase of the upgrading process. The upgrading
will transform Main Street into a more pedestrian friendly
and landscaped environment as part of the revitalization
of the Plettenberg Bay CBD spearheaded by the Bitou Municipality.
The
current contract covers a 200m stretch of road and pedestrian
walkways running from the "Dolphin Circle" at
Strand Street to the Crescent Street intersection. The contract
duration is 30 weeks from June 2006 to February 2007. There
is to be a two to three week recess in December.
While two lanes of traffic will be kept
open, there will however be no parking available in the
project area due to a lack of space. The construction will
be carried out in stages. With the first stage involving
the completion of the bulk of the works on the Western,
or higher, side of the road from the centre line to the
adjacent properties. From about October, the works will
shift over the Eastern, or lower, side of the road, once
again from the centre line to the eastern property boundaries
