Whaling season in full swing

The first Southern Right Whales visited us early this year. After reports that there were two Southern Right Whales in the Bay researchers managed to get identifiable photographs of both individuals, which only stayed in the bay for one morning. For reasons unknown to us these two whales obviously hadn't made the return journey to the Antarctic for the summer months.

Since the first week in June there have been sporadic sightings and in August we knew that the whales have come at last. Although most of the sightings have been made in the Keurbooms area, we had a few visitors that gave us a good show from Robberg Beach , Central Beach and Look Out beach.

Sightings of whales in the Knysna Lagoon made headlines in our local newspapers. It's not uncommon for the Whales to go through The Heads, but never have they gone as far up in the lagoon as the Oyster beds. They usually just go as far as the Knysna Yacht Club. Just to show you that no matter how big you are your can still be a little nosey!
