PLETT HISTORY
JOACHIN VAN PLETTENBERG
In 1778, the governor of the colony, Joachin van Plettenberg made his historic journey to Plettenberg Bay. He left the Cape in a carriage drawn by 8
|
| horses. There was also a second coach and 5 other wagons. With him on the first part of the journey was Captain Robert Jacob Gordon. In November, the party visited Melkhout Kraal, which at that time belonged to Stephanus Esais Terblanche. Botha's farm was reached on the evening of the 5 November 1778. On the 6 th of November the historic demarcation stone, known as Van Plettenberg's |
| Beacon, was erected. The original stone has been removed to the Cultural History Museum in Cape Town and a replica now stands on the original site overlooking the bay. It was also during this time that Plettenberg Bay received it's present day name. |
