After the sighting of a 3,5m Great White
Shark close to the shore near Central Beach on Wednesday
12th April, a shark warning has been issued to bathers
and surfers entering the sea in the Plettenberg Bay
area.
Plett NSRI Station Commander, Ray Farnham, said the
sharks were visibly patrolling along Plett's stretch
of coast, but that no incidents had been reported. He
did, however, appeal to members of the public to exercise
caution and to avoid swimming in the river mouths or
where rip currents were strongest as these were most
likely to be the areas where the sharks would be feeding
on fish. The increase in the Great Whites is believed
to be the result of the tail-end of the sardine run
and this increase in the number of sharks was expected
to continue until early May.
Bathers are sun-worshippers are encouraged to call 082
990 5975 to report any sightings.
